1/4" equivalent is M6 and the I.D is 0.35mm bigger but will be fit for purpose in the majority of circumstances. A washer has multiple purposes depending on it’s’ shape, form and material. Other uses are as a spacer, spring (belleville washer, wave washer), wear pad, preload indicating device, locking device, and to reduce vibration (rubber washer).
